Dental fillings are something most of us will have to undergo during our lifetime to restore our oral health and prevent further decay. As far back as the 19th century, the fillings that were used were amalgam, which basically means that the filling was composed of a mixture of metals such as silver, copper, and tin. In the 1960s, composite fillings were introduced as an alternative to traditional metal tooth fillings. Composite fillings are also known as resin fillings, white fillings, and tooth-coloured fillings. They are basically similar to amalgam but they are tooth-coloured to resemble the colour of your natural teeth. Composite fillings are made with a mixture of plastic and glass to make a strong filling for any tooth, front or back.
Just like amalgam fillings, composite fillings are used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, bruxism, and fissures. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then filled with a composite filling. They are very durable and can last many years, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile. However, as with most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced.

ToggleThe Advantages of Composite Fillings
Colour to Match Natural Teeth
One of the most popular reasons most dental patients choose composite fillings is their natural, tooth-coloured appearance. These fillings are almost invisible since they are colour-matched to blend in with your natural teeth. As a result, many patients prefer them for repairing cosmetic issues such as chips and cracks for front teeth or the more visible areas of the teeth. On the other hand, since amalgam fillings are composed of a blend of metals such as mercury, silver-tin alloy, and copper, when they harden they have a dark silver colour.
Less Natural Tooth Material Removed
Another advantage of a composite filling is that it may require much less of your natural tooth to be removed in order to add the filling. This means that once the filling has bonded to the natural tooth, the repaired tooth can be stronger and more stable than it could be with an amalgam filling.
Non-Toxic Material
Some patients can have allergic reactions to metals used in amalgam fillings. This can be avoided with white composite filling since they are made using non-toxic plastic and ceramic which cause no adverse effects.
Less Sensitive to Temperature
Composite fillings also result in fewer instances of tooth sensitivity. The resin in composite filling acts like an insulating agent against hot and cold temperatures. Amalgam filling, however, is made of metals, so they tend to expand or contract when exposed to heat or cold which can lead to weakening and cracking.
Can Be Repaired
If your composite fillings are damaged due to an accident or grinding, they can be easily repaired.
Applying Composite Feelings
At My Dentist at Morgan Creek in South Surrey, our dentists, will, normally, be able to repair your teeth with composite fillings in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove any decay or an old filling as necessary. Space is then thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new composite filling is applied. When the filling is applied to your damaged tooth, it will be shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.
