It is natural that over time your teeth will begin to become discoloured but thanks to advances in cosmetic dentistry, a teeth whitening treatment can help you regain your bright white smile. At My Dentist at Morgan Creek in South Surrey / White Rock, BC, we provide our patients with two options for whiter and brighter teeth. We offer In-Office and At-Home Teeth Whitening; both methods are safe when done under our dentists’ supervision. Teeth whitening has become one of the fastest ways to enhance your smile but there are certain facts about this treatment that you should be aware of.

ToggleWhy Do Teeth Become Discoloured?
Often our patients ask us why their teeth become discoloured or yellowish when they brush and floss twice a day and visit us for their bi-annual cleaning. The reasons why your teeth lose their bright white colour are varied.
For example, consuming food or drinks which can easily stain teeth enamel, such as coffee, wine, cola, curry, berries, or beetroot, will eventually discolour your pearly whites. Also, if you are a smoker, you are probably aware that tar and nicotine can result in brown and yellow stains. Of course, as we grow older, the outer enamel of our teeth becomes thinner and the yellowish or darker dentin begins to show through more. What’s more, prolonged use of certain medications may affect the colour of our teeth. For example, some antihistamines, antibiotics, high blood pressure medication, or chemotherapy can discolour teeth.
Teeth Whitening Treatment
Teeth whitening treatments involve a bleaching process that creates an oxidation reaction that breaks down the staining agents. As you need to have healthy teeth and gums in order to undergo teeth whitening, you need to consult with your dentist to ensure you are eligible for this procedure.
Types of Teeth Whitening
At My Dentist at Morgan Creek, as we have mentioned, we offer you two methods of teeth whitening: In-Office Teeth Whitening and At-Home Teeth Whitening. In-Office Teeth Whitening involves a powerful advanced bleaching treatment with high-concentration oxidizing agents called Zoom!®
The At-Home Teeth Whitening treatment usually requires two visits. During the first visit, impressions or molds of your teeth are taken to fabricate the custom clear plastic trays. On the second visit, you will try on the custom trays for proper fit, and adjustments are made if necessary. You will have to wear the trays with a special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks. This duration depends on the degree of staining and the level of whitening desired.
The results of At-Home Teeth Whitening are similar to those of In-Office Teeth Whitening, except that At-Home Teeth Whitening takes longer. In addition, the In-Office Teeth Whitening systems deliver long-lasting and consistent results, in the shortest time possible.
Zoom Teeth Whitening Technology
The advanced teeth whitening system Zoom!® used by our dentists is fast, safe, painless, and effective, proven to brighten your smile by 3 to 6 shades after just one application. It has many advantages over other whitening systems like take-home strips, bleaching toothpaste, and take-home whitening gels. Zoom lightens the dentin and enamel of the teeth while keeping the internal structures of the teeth intact during and after the treatment. What’s more, Zoom lightens or bleaches stains on crowns, veneers, and other restorations.
